The definition of a diphthong In language is: a gliding vowel sound normally represented by two adjacent vowels.  Another explanation is: a vowel combination usually involving a quick but smooth movement from one vowel to another, often interpreted by listeners as a single vowel sound.  

An example in English would be the word “house”, compared to a single vowel sound in the word “seen”.  An example in Arabic, although it is  not quite the same, would be the word  when going from the fat-hah on the  to the  saakinah.
