Question
In
surah Al-Baqarah aayah #120 there is the word:
.
How would the ending be if we had to stop on this word?
Answer
There
are two aspects to your question, the first is how to stop on the word
the
second is what to do after you stop here.
We may note that the last letter in the word is a
with
a shaddah on it. There are in the
archived tidbit lessons two
lessons on the “accent” or
in
the recitation of the Qur’an. The
first case of the
was
just as we have here. If we are
stopping on a word that has a shaddah on the last letter, and the last letter
is not a
,
a
, or a qalqalah letter, we need to
make a
in
our reading to make sure it is clear that there are two letters.
If we are continuing in our reading and not stopping on the word
there
is also an accent or
because
of another case in the lesson on the “accent”.
In the second case, if there is a
with
a shaddah on it preceded by a kasrah or a fat-h, there should be an accent or
so
that the letter
doesn’t
become lengthened into a medd letter.
The
second aspect that we would like to address is what to do if we stop on the
word
when
we want to start up after taking a breath.
Stopping on this word is in the good stop (
) category, which
means it is allowed to stop on that word, but not allowed to start on that
which comes next. In other words,
we need to go back some words to relay the correct meaning.
In this case, we actually need to take a big breath and start back at:
,
otherwise the meaning would not convey the true intended meaning of Allah, the
Exalted.
And
Allah knows best.
