Question

Assalamu alaikum,

In suratul baqarah v.15 how would you stop on the word . Would it be with a hamzah, or with the written yaa? Does this vary between the qira'aat and how so?

Wa alaikum assalaam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh,

In the reading of Hafs ‘an ‘Aasim, and for all recitations outside of those of  and , we stop on the word  with a hamzah saakinah.  The hamzah was written on the letter , but it is a hamzah and we always stop with a sukoon on the last letter of a word.  So we would proceed in pronunciation directly from the kasrah on the  to the hamzah saakinah with no lengthening at all. 

The qira’ah of  changes any hamzah in the middle or end of the word when stopping on that word, and the recitation of  follows suit only when the hamzah is the last letter of the word and again, one is stopping on the word.  When stopping on  there is more than one allowed way for reading the word in the recitation of  and .  One way is changing the hamzah to a  saakinah, so then there would be a two count lengthening when stopping in this way.  Another allowed way for these two reader when stopping is making  of the hamzah on the end of the word with .  Other allowed ways are changing the hamzah into a  with a dhammah on it and stopping with  or .
