Question

As-salaamu ‘alaykum,

I’ve heard some recitors read ayah 27 of Surat al-Qiyamah as “wa qeela mar-raaq” instead of ‘wa qeela mann; raaq” as though there’s a “shaddah’ on the ‘ra’. Is this a mistake or is it a valid way to read that verse.

Wa alaikum assalaam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh,

The recitation of Hafs ‘an ‘Aasim by the way of Ash-Shaatibiyyah has a required breathless pause () on the phrase , and this pause separates the  saakinah from the .  In the other authentic ways of Hafs ‘an ‘Aasim (tareeq at-Tayyibah) there are some ways that have the (breathless pause) and some that do not.  All of the other ten qira’aat read this aayah without a (breathless pause). 

When there is no , the saakinah of the word  meets the  and the normal rules for saakinah apply, which would  in this case be an without a ghunnah.  There would be a resultant shaddah on the  due to the.

The way you heard this aayah being read then is an authentic and valid way for reading when reading any of the other ten qira’aat besides Hafs ‘an ‘Aasim and some of the ways of Hafs ‘an Aasim from tareeq at-Tayyibah.
