Question
Salaam Alikum:
In our Qur'an class we a are memorizing Sura AN-NABA'. In the ayat that says
YAWM YUNFAKHU FESSUURI
,
I notice FESSUURI
was recited very
quickly and not given the two harakat stretch. What rule is that?
thank you
Answer
Wa alaikum assalaam wa rahmatu Allahi wa barakatuh.
The word
ends in a medd
letter, that normally gets two vowel counts in timing, and if we read this
word alone without joining it to the next word, we would give it the two vowel
counts. In the combination

medd letter meeting a saakin letter, the first part of the shaddah on the
letter
. There is a rule in the Arabic
language that there is a forbiddance of two saakin letters meeting in
pronunciation; this is called
. In the case
that the first of the two saakin letters is a medd letter, we drop the medd
letter in pronunciation, and only pronounce the letter before it with its
vowel. That is why there is no lengthening of the word
.
Other examples of this with all three medd letters are:
