Question
Salam Alyikum:
I ran into a black dot over a Alif And I was wondering the significance of it.
Would that be the same as the oblong zero? The black dot is in surah
FUSSILAT aayah 44 at the first line. Thank you.
Answer
Wa alaikum assalaam wa rahmatu Allahi wa
barakatuh.
The word
is
a special word in that different recitations have different rules. In this
word there are two hamzaat (plural of hamzah), both with a fat-h at the
beginning of the word. Some readers always have special rules when there are
two hamzahs next to each other at the beginning of the word. In the reading
of Hafs 'an 'Aasim, we do not read the second hamzah in this particular word
clearly, and instead make
(tas-heel, or
easing) of this second hamzah, meaning we read it in between a hamzah and an
alif. This is the reason for the black dot over the second hamzah, which is
written on an alif; to let us know that this hamzah is not read normally. To

You are most welcome.
