Question

May I please know if it needs for someone to be very knowledgeable in Qur'an before teaching it to others?  What I mean is,  if a person has a basic knowledge of the Qur'an,  is it alright for that person to teach and share that small knowledge to others, or is it necessary that one is very knowledgeable instead?

I have asked this question in reference to a hadith concerning teaching even a single ayat you know to other muslims.

Answer

If you know Qur’an, even just the basics, and there is a Muslim in need of learning, and circumstances, geographical or personal, prevent that Muslim from being able to attend a regular class, then indeed you should teach them.  It may be that you are the most qualified teacher for kilometers or in a whole province.  It would be wrong to think that you should not teach when there is no other option.  If on the other hand, there is someone better qualified to teach them, and it is feasible for the students to attend that teaching circle, you should readily point them in that direction.  In the meantime, may Allah make easy for you continued learning of the Qur’an, grant you the ability to complete your studies, and make you of those who learn the Qur’an and teach it, the best of the Muslim community.
