Question
Asalaamu alaykum. In surah fussilat ayah 44 there is the word   .  How is this word pronounced.  Is the alif given a fatha?

Answer
Wa alaikum assalaam wa rahmatullahi wa barakaatuh.
In this word, there are two hamzahs both with fathahs next to each other, the first is a questioning hamzah and the second is part of of the word.  This is a special word.  Hafs 'an 'Aasim reads this with (easing) of the second hamzah so that it is read in between a hamzah and an alif.  It is like a "lazy" hamzah.
