Question
Assalamwalaikum, Why is it that whenever I listen to the Quran, the reciter always pauses at places where there is no sign of pause found in the Mushaf and they also go back to repeat it and finish the verse? How do you know when you can stop In the middle of a verse which doesn't have a sign of pause found in the Quran? Answer Wa alaikum assalaam wa rahmatullahi wa barakaatuh There are three allowed types of stops in the Qur'an, two do not require going back a few words when you start again after taking a breath, one types does. If the phrase is complete in meaning but attached to that which comes next grammatically and in meaning, the reciter can stop on it, but must go back a few words (according to the meaning) when starting up again after taking a breath. This is called al-waqf al-hasan. To read more about this type of waqf please see: http://www.abouttajweed.com/index.php/tajweed-rules/57-al-waqf-the-stop/80-al-waqf-the-stop-4 You can also click on previous and next to read and learn about the other types of stops. |
