How to differentiate in terms of pronunciation between ikhfa and idghaam for meem saakinah?
Answer
In the ikhfa' shafawee, we close our lips on the meem and then separate them with the ba'.  In the idhgaam of the meem saakinah with a meem with a vowel, we close our lips on the meem and separate the lips with a meem.
The ikhfa' then is in between an idh-haar and an idghaam, which is the very definition of the ikhfa'.
