Question
What significance does the madd (elongation) of letters have on the meaning of the Qur'an? If one does not apply madd on the letters, does it effect the meaning?
Answer
There are two categories of lengthenings (mudood):
The natural lengthening ( ) and the secondary lengthening ( ).

Leaving out a basic "natural"  medd () DOES change the meaning and this is a major mistake in reading.
The secondary medd ( ) does not effect the meaning of the words.  The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah upon him would read with elongations of the sounds (as we are taught now in  the tajweed rules) and when there was a medd letter and afterwards a hamzah or a sukoon he would prolong the sound.   Leaving out a medd  therefore (we are referring to the secondary mudood) means we are not reading the Qur'an as it was revealed.
