Assalau Alaykum

I couldn’t find anything in the Rules for Warsh section of your site regarding the leen medd followed by sukoon, so I assume that this means that the rules are the same as those for Hafs. Is this correct?

I have tajweed book which says that, when stopping on the word, the medd can be 2, 4 or 6 counts – as it is for Hafs – but I also have another book which says it can only be 4 or 6 counts. Which is correct?

Do the rules for Hafs about the presented sukoon lengthening being stronger than the leen medd and resulting restrictions when both of these medd are present in the same phrase also apply to Warsh? Many thanks.  Wassalam

PS: The webpage on your site for Lesson 14 of the Rules for Warsh does not work and has been inaccessible for quite some time.

Wa alaikum assalaam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh,

As long as the leen letter is not followed by a hamzah, yes, the rules are the same for Hafs and Warsh.   occurs when there is a leen letter, meaning a or saakinah preceded by a and only one voweled letter follows it, and we stop on this word with a temporary sukoon (for stopping only).  Warsh agrees with all the other reciters when the leen letter is not followed by a hamzah.  If however we have  meaning a leen letter followed by a hamzah, such as in the word , then Warsh lengthening the leen 4 or 6 vowel counts whether stopping on the word or continuing.  This very well may have been the cause of the difference in the books you looked at, one may have been referring to the normal  when stopping and the other referring to , Allah knows best.

As to the  vs  and the counts allowed for both, Warsh agrees with Hafs, with the exception again for .  In this case he lengthens it 4 or 6 vowel counts irregardless of the length of .

Although we understand the questioner has read all the Warsh lessons, we ask the visitors that have not, to please see the Warsh lesson on  for more information on the relationship between  and : .

Jazakum Allahu khairan for informing us about the link not working.  We have fixed it and it should now be accessible.

You are most welcome.  Wa assalaam.
