Question
Assalaamu alaikum.

Dear respected teachers,

I have a question concerning the Ghunnah and its ranks.  As stated in your website that there are four levels of ghunnah: the Most Complete ghunnah, the Complete ghunnah, the Most Incomplete ghunnah, and the Incomplete ghunnah.  If there are four levels of ghunnah, wouldn't the counts for them be also different? I thought that all ghunnah are two vowel counts long.  Please explain.

JazaakumullAhu khayran.

Answer
Wa alaikum assalaam wa rahmatullahi wa barakaatuh
What you said is exactly correct, all ghunan are not the same length and we do not measure the length of a ghunnah in vowel counts.  We use vowel counts for measuring mudood or lengthenings as they are based on the length of one harakah (vowel).
The exact timing of the various ghunan length can only be learned by reading to and being corrected by a qualified mastered teacher and then with time it will become second nature to lengthen them the proper length insha'  Allah.
