Question
Assalamu Alaikum If yaa sakin comes after an alif (which happens when making waqf on certain words), will that yaa sakin be a "leen letter"? Will it come in the maddam-maa category? Answer Wa alaikum assalaam wa rahmatullahi wa barakaatuh If a saakinah (due to stopping on the word) follows an alif, such as when stopping on the word and not a leen letter. This is because the sukoon on the is not a fixed sukoon, but results from stopping on the word with a temporary sukoon. We have then the requirements for which is defined as:A medd which occurs when there is only one letter after one of the three medd letters, it is the last letter of the word, this last letter has any vowel on it, and we are stopping on the last letter with a presented sukoon. We therefore lengthen this word, when stopping on it, 2, 4, or 6 vowel counts. When reading this word in continuum with that which comes next, we lengthen the alif two vowel counts and the receives the one vowel count for a voweled letter. Wa assalaam |
