Question
Assalaamu Alaikum,

JazakumAlllahu Khairan for provding such beneficial material on Tajweed. May Allah reward you all greatly.

In Surah Al Fajr, Verse 4, is the last word "yasr" recited with a mufakham raa or muraqqaq raa when stopping? I've heard that it was muraqqaq because the original word was yasree, with a yaa after the raa,but it was omitted (a stylistic aspect of the Qur'an, like lakum deenakum wa li ya deen). But normally, stopping on a raa in this sort of situation would make it muraqqaq. Thanks for the help! JazakumAllah!

Answer
Wa alaikum assalaam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh,
The normal rule for the ra' when stopping on it, is that we look at what precedes it.  If it is preceded by a fathah or dhammah or a sukoon which is preceded by a fathah or dhammah, we make tafkheem of the ra'.  If it is preceded by a kasrah, or a ya' saakinah, we make tarqeeq of the ra'.   This general rule is applied throughout the Qur'an.
Imam Ibn Al Jazaree mentioned in An-Nashr volume two page 110 or 111, depending on which edition that he thought that when stopping on this word, yasr, that we can stop with either tafkheem or tarqeeq, with tarqeeq preferred.   In this proposal of Imam Ibn Al Jazaree, rahimahullah, he has given another possibility based on the knowledge of "sarf" or morphology, which is difficult for the majority of Muslims to understand.
Although we cannot say it is wrong to stop on this word with tarqeeq, Sheikh Ayman prefers that we stick to the general known rules for the ra' and stop on it with tafkheem, as this is easier for the student of the Qur'an to understand and apply.
