Question
Assalamu 'alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa baraktuh

I have a question regarding the word 'firq' in ayatul bahr in Suratus Shu'araa (ayat 63)

1) If reading with qasr ul munfasil:

The raa is read with tafkheem if continuing.

Is the raa to be read with tafkheem if stopping on the word also? Or do you still have a choice?

2) If reading with tawassut ul munfasil:

The raa is read with tafkheem or tarqeeq if stopping on the word.

Am I correct in understanding that it is the same case if continuing?

From reading around (I haven't found anything decisive) it seems that if you are of the opinion that you read the raa with tafkheem whilst continuing then you would also stop with tafkheem and vice versa.

The books I looked in just say: "Qasr = wajoob at tafkheem"
"Tawassut = Tafkheem au tarqeeq wasslan"

Jazakallahu khairan

Wassalamu 'alaikum wa rahamtullahi wa barakatuh

Answer
Wa alaikum assalaam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh,
The different turuq vary as to the tafkheem and tarqeeq of the saakinah in the word  only when continuing.  When stopping on this word all agree that the is read with tafkheem.
You are correct that in the tareeq of Hafs that has shortening of al-munfasil , that the is read with tafkheem only when continuing, and in the tareeq of Ash-Shaatibiyyah (the way most Muslims in the world read) with four vowel counts for the munfasil both tafkheem and tareeq are allowed when continuing.  The allowing of tafkheem and tarqeeq when continuing is due to the kasrah on the qaaf and the saakinah preceded by a kasrah.

When stopping on , all ways in all the qira'aat read the with tafkheem, since the qaaf in this case is saakinah.
