Question
Assalamu 'alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh I was wondering what is the 'best' way of learning the Qiraa'aat. If one wanted to memorise a text would it be sufficient just to memorise Tayyibatun Nashr (and of course study it too) as I have the impression that it contains the turuq detailed in Ash Shatibiyyah and Ad Durrah too? Or is the case that one memorises Ash Shatibiyyah and Ad Durrah first and later Tayyibatun Nashr and skipping the first 2 is detrimental to one's learning? Jazakallahu khairan Wassalamu 'alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh Answer Wa alaikum assalaam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh, Each step in the Qira'aat is based on the knowledge of the previous step, so the Durrah (for the three qiraa'aat to complete the ten) is based on tareeq Ash-Shatibiyyah, and without that knowledge, one will not be able to understand the Durrah poem. Likewise, At-Tayyibah for the ten grand qira'aat -Al-'asharah Al-Kubraa- is based on the knowledge of Ash-Shatibiyyah and Ad-Durrah. All these studies require devotion and steadfastness to reach the goal of reading the ten qira'aat and getting an ijaazah in it, first by tareeq Ash-Shatibiyyah and Ad-Durrah, then by tareeq At-Tayyibah, with Allah's help and facilitation, purity of intention, and then one's hard work. In tareeq At-Tayyibah there are numerous turuq for each riwaayah, where as in tareeq Ash-Shaatibiyyah and Ad-Durrah there is one tareeq for each way, although there can be more than one allowed way of certain rules or words, it is no where as vast as tareeq at-Tayyibah. It is necessary to absorb the ways of reading first by tareeq Ash-Shaatibiyyah and Ad-Durrah before moving on to the many turuq in At-Tayyibah. It is correct that the ten qiraa'aat by the way of Shatibiyyah and Ad-Durrah are contained in At-Tayyibah. Starting with At-Tayyibah would be sort of like trying to get a PhD without first getting the foundation needed for acquiring it. The Shatibiyyah poem is a challenge, but with Allah's will and mercy, it can be memorized and understood, after that the other poems are less daunting, although still challenging. May Allah grant you the ten qira'aat first by way of Ash-Shatibiyyah and Ad-Durrah, then by tareeq At-Tayyibah. Wa iyyaaakum. Wa assalaam alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh. |
