Question
Assalamuilakum, How do you pronounce the 'thaal'? I was taught to say it with a 'z' sound, but have been told that is wrong. Say for Surah Al-Nasr, I would read the beginning with a light 'z' sound, but have been told its a 'dha' sound. Jazakallahu Khairun. Answer Wa alaikum assalaam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh. The letter is not pronounced like a "z", there is an Arabic letter that is pronounced like that, but not the . The is emitted from the tip of the tongue (from the top side of the tip) and the bottom edges of the two top front incisors. Care should be taken to make sure the top of the tip is really colliding or separating (depending whether there is no vowel or a vowel) with the edges of the teeth and not the plates of the teeth. Please see the lesson on this articulation point at: http://www.abouttajweed.com/articulation-points-areas-of-the-arabic-letters/tip-of-the-tongue-pa.html . We apologize, but you will need to copy the link and paste it in your browser. Wa iyaakum wa-l-muslimeen. |
