Question
Assalaamu 'Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakaatuhu
When making madd (like Al Muttasil) of an alif attached to a letter of tafkheem what should the position of the tongue be? Low in the mouth or elevated? Jazaakallaahu Khairan Kathiran and may we meet in Jannah in shaa Allah. Ameen Answer
Wa alaikum assalaam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh,
The alif follows the letter previous to it in tafkheem and tarqeeq, so if the letter before the alif has tafkheem, the alif also has tafkheem, and the tongue will be elevated and the sound will be focused to the roof of the mouth. This holds true for a natural lengthening , such as in: ,as well as for prolonged lengthenings such as in and . An example of this is alif in the word: , which is . If the letter before the alif has tarqeeq, then the alif also has tarqeeq and the posterior portion of the tongue will not be elevated. The letter following the alif has no influence on the alif as to tafkheem and tarqeeq. Please also see: http://www.abouttajweed.com/tafkheem-and-tarqeeq/tafkheem-and-tarqeeq-part-2.html Wa iyyaakum. Ameen.
