Question

Assalamualaykum

When teaching children under the age of 11 tajweed rules is it ok to explain to them some of the basic theory of the rules. As i have experienced the children do understand the basics of the rules and can apply them into their reading. Or should the explanation of the rules be avoided.

Answer

Wa alaikum assalaam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh.

Yes, it is fine to teach children the basic theory, of course using simple terms and examples.  The main thing is for them to listen to proper recitation and be corrected in their reading, but the theory will help them apply rules and is to be encouraged, as long as they can absorb it.  The children obviously have to be able to read Arabic to understand a sukoon and tanween from other tashkeel, etc.

This is to be avoided in very young children of four and five years of course, as they cannot comprehend the rules and most cannot read Arabic well at that age.

Wa iyyaakum.
