Salaam Alikum:

In our Qur'an class we a are memorizing Sura AN-NABA'. In the ayat that says YAWM YUNFAKHU FESSUURI  , I notice FESSUURI was recited very quickly and not given the two harakat stretch. What rule is that?

Wa alaikum assalaam wa rahmatu Allahi wa barakatuh.

The word ends in a medd letter, that normally gets two vowel counts in timing, and if we read this word alone without joining it to the next word, we would give it the two vowel counts.  In the combination  we have a medd letter meeting a saakin letter, the first part of the shaddah on the letter .  There is a rule in the Arabic language that there is a forbiddance of two saakin letters meeting in pronunciation; this is called .  In the case that the first of the two saakin letters is a medd letter, we drop the medd letter in pronunciation, and only pronounce the letter before it with its vowel.  That is why there is no lengthening of the word
